Midwest Airlines Inc. has informed the state of Wisconsin that it has to lay off 166 employees in a series of job reductions beginning Aug. 31.
In a mass layoff notice filed with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, the Oak Creek-based airline said the layoffs will include both permanent and temporary job cuts. Employees impacted include headquarters personnel, as well as pilots and flight attendants.

The airline said about 74 nonbargaining unit employees will be terminated and 40 pilots and 52 flight attendants will be furloughed.

Most of the job cuts from Midwest’s Oak Creek headquarters and operations at Milwaukee’s Mitchell International Airport are back-office and administrative positions that duplicate jobs at Indianapolis-based Republic Airways Holdings Inc., which completed its $31 million purchase of Midwest on July 31.

The jobs that remain intact include mechanics at Midwest’s maintenance hanger, gate agents and ground crews at Mitchell International, and customer service representatives at the headquarters and reservations center, 6744 S. Howell Ave.
