At a press conference , the Florida Lottery announced that the $189 million jackpot from the POWERBALL® drawing held on October 3 was claimed by W. Steemers Trust. William A. Steele, M.D., 56, of Orlando, is the trustee. The W. Steemers Trust will receive a one-time, lump-sum payment for the winnings in the amount of $101,160,403.68.
Dr. Steele said that he waited until several days after the drawing was held before checking his ticket. “I’m still in shock,” Steele said. He also mentioned that plans for the money include giving to charity.
Steele said he purchased his ticket at a Chevron station at Sand Lake and Turkey Lake roads “that I go to frequently” in time for the record Oct. 3 drawing. Steele said he was preparing to go to a charity event at Universal Studios, the home of the Powerball drawing, a week after the win when he asked a friend to go to the Florida Lottery web site and check the numbers from the ticket he had in his pocket. Dr. Steele read the numbers to his friend and they were both in disbelief at first.
At 4 a.m. on a Sunday morning, Steele woke his wife and asked her if she loved him. Then he told her about the ticket and his wife told him to “go back to sleep.” Steele said he will set up a foundation and plans to support several charities in the near future.
The POWERBALL jackpot-winning ticket was purchased at Sandlake Chevron Food Mart, located at 7331 W. Sandlake Road in Orlando. The Florida Lottery retailer received a bonus incentive of $80,000 for selling the jackpot-winning ticket.
Since POWERBALL ticket sales in Florida began on January 4, 2009, Florida has the most POWERBALL winners of any state. The Florida Lottery has had 13 winners at the $1 million prize level, 49 winners at the $200,000 level, and a total of more than 8.5 million players winning more than $275.8 million.
