Holidays in Australia
New Year's Day First day of a Gregorian calendar, Australia celebrates the New Year's Day, January 1. Due to its geographical position close to the International Date Line, Australia is one of the first countries in the world to welcome the New Year. New Year's Day is a public holiday. If January 1 is a Saturday or Sunday, the public holiday moves to Monday, January 2 or 3. Schools and other educational establishments are closed, as New Year's Day falls in the summer holiday. Many organizations and businesses are closed.
Australia Day Australia Day, 26 January, is the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet of 11 convict ships from Great Britain, and the raising of the Union Jack at Sydney Cove by its commander Captain Arthur Phillip, in 1788. Australia Day is a public holiday in all states and territories. All schools and offices are closed. Many people have a day off work and use the day to picnic, to go shopping.
Good Friday Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Good Friday is the start of a four-day weekend and falls during the Easter school holidays. Many people take a short vacation around this time, often within Australia. Traditionally, people eat hot cross buns on Good Friday. On this day a lot of sporting events are held on or start.
Easter Monday Easter Monday is the day after Easter Sunday, which celebrates Jesus' resurrection, according to Christian belief. The day is also known as Bright Monday. Easter Monday is a public holiday throughout Australia. A number of large sporting events end on Easter Monday. Many people enjoy the Easter eggs that they received during the weekend. They may also eat an Easter bilby, a chocolate model of a small, endangered mammal native to Australia.
ANZAC Day 'ANZAC' stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. Anzac Day is a national public holiday and is considered by many Australians to be one of the most solemn days of the year. Anzac Day falls on the 25th of April each year. Anzac Day is one of Australia's most important national commemorative occasions. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.
Christmas Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Christians believe that Jesus is 'the son of God', the Messiah sent from Heaven to save the world. In the weeks leading up to Christmas houses are decorated; greetings cards sent out; carols sung; Christmas trees installed in homes, schools and public places; and children delight in anticipating a visit from Santa Claus. On Christmas Day family and friends gather to exchange gifts and enjoy special Christmas food. People often spend Christmas Day with family members or close friends. Christmas Day falls in the middle of the summer school holiday and both December 25 and 26 are public holidays.
Boxing Day Boxing Day is traditionally the day following Christmas Day, when servants and tradesmen would receive gifts from their superiors or employers, known as a "Christmas box". December 26 is the Boxing Day holiday celebrated throughout most of Australia, except the state of South Australia. South Australia observes a holiday known as Proclamation Day, instead of Boxing Day, on December 26.
