New Year's Day

Marching bands, musicians and other groups walk through the city's streets. Banks, post offices and many other businesses and organizations are closed. Some stores and pubs are open, although they may open later and close earlier than usual.

It is named after Saint Patrick , the most commonly recognised of the patron saints of Ireland.It is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland and a large, national multi day festival now takes place each year called St. Patrick's Festival.People celebrate the day with parades, wearing of the green, and drinking beer.

It is an occasion for people in the Republic of Ireland to remember the Easter Uprising, which occurred in 1916, and attend sports events and local fairs.People may attend special church services, local fairs or sports events. Many people do not have to work on Good Friday or Easter Monday so the long Easter weekend is a popular time for short vacations in Ireland or abroad. May Day (La Bealtaine), or Labour Day (La an Lucht Oibre), is the first Monday of May. It is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland. It is a traditional Celtic festival and a time to campaign for workers rights.Fairs or communal meals are held in some villages and often see children or young people dance around a maypole. Some people attend Labour Day parades, demonstrations and celebrations in large cities, such as Dublin. These often attract contingents from trade unions, political parties and groups campaigning for social justice from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. These events may be on the first Monday of May or a Saturday close to this date.

Christmas lasts from Christmas Eve until January 6th,the Feast of Epiphany, or "Little Christmas."Irish families decorate their homes with lights, tinsel and baubles. A Christmas tree is usually erected in the family home on the first day of the holy advent calendar. The tree will be beautifully decorated with an angel on top, presents will lay underneath as seen with many family homes around the world.

Most families will treat St. Stephen’s Day as day of rest with a visit to their local church and also celebrate with another large meal. St Stephen’s Day may also bring relations to the house hold to join in on the Christmas Celebrations.
